Seeking support for your gender identity can feel overwhelming, especially when public conversations and political debates create uncertainty or fear. You may be questioning where to turn or wondering whether it’s safe to seek the care you deserve.
Perhaps you’ve considered therapy before but worried about how you’ll be treated. Maybe you’ve had experiences with therapists who didn’t understand your identity, made assumptions, or left you feeling unseen. Those experiences can make it difficult to trust the process again.

Whatever brings you here, you deserve compassionate, respectful care in an environment where you can show up as your authentic self.

Gender Affirming Care We Offer
Because every person’s journey is unique, we tailor therapy to your individual needs. Our services may include:
Letters of Support
Several clinicians at Chicago Therapy Associates are qualified to provide letters of support for gender-affirming medical care, including hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries. Because insurance and provider requirements can vary, we can help you understand the process and provide the documentation needed when appropriate.
Ongoing Gender-Affirming Therapy
Our therapists provide affirming, individualized counseling for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals. Therapy can address concerns related to gender identity while also supporting other aspects of your mental health, including anxiety, depression, shame, family relationships, trauma, religious trauma, and life transitions.
Creating an inclusive, culturally responsive environment is central to the care we provide.
Who is a fit for gender affirming care?
Many people who seek gender-affirming therapy identify as transgender, nonbinary, or gender diverse.
This may include individuals who identify as:
- Transgender
- Nonbinary
- Transmasculine
- Transfeminine
- Agender
- Genderqueer
- Genderfluid
- Gender-expansive
- Intersex
- Two-Spirit
Others may feel that no single label fully describes their experience, or they may choose not to use labels at all.
Gender exists on a broad and diverse spectrum, and wherever you are in your journey, you deserve care that is affirming, respectful, and centered on your individual experience.
Gender Affirmation Specialists in Chicago, IL
Searching for a gender-affirming therapist can feel overwhelming, particularly if you’ve previously felt misunderstood or invalidated in therapy.
Many therapist directories include broad terms like “LGBTQ+” or “transgender” among long lists of specialties, but that doesn’t always tell you what kind of experience, training, or affirming care a therapist actually provides.
It’s understandable to wonder:
Will this therapist really understand me?
Will I feel safe being honest?
Will I have to educate my therapist about my own identity?
These are important questions, and you’re not alone in asking them.
At Chicago Therapy Associates, we believe affirming care involves more than simply being accepting. It means creating a therapeutic relationship built on respect, cultural humility, ongoing education, and genuine support so you can focus on your growth instead of worrying whether you’ll be understood.
You deserve a therapist who helps you feel safe enough to be fully yourself.
Thinking of Seeing a Chicago Gender Affirming Therapist?
How do I know everything will be confidential? I’m concerned about this coming back to bite me, given the state of politics.
Many people have understandable concerns about privacy when seeking gender-affirming care.
Your confidentiality is protected by both ethical standards and privacy laws. At Chicago Therapy Associates, we take your privacy seriously and are thoughtful about how clinical documentation is handled. If you have questions about your records, confidentiality, or what information may be shared, your therapist will be happy to discuss those concerns so you can make informed decisions about your care.
What if I’m not actually “trans enough” to seek gender-affirming care?
There is no single way to experience gender, and there is no test you have to pass before seeking support.
Many people exploring their gender identity worry that they aren’t “enough” or that they don’t fit neatly into a particular label. Others have experienced pressure—not only from society, but sometimes even within LGBTQ+ spaces—to present themselves a certain way.
At Chicago Therapy Associates, we believe your identity is yours to define. Whether you’re questioning your gender, exploring your identity, transitioning, or simply looking for an affirming therapist, you deserve compassionate care without judgment or expectations.
How do I know this is a safe place and not some scam to convince me to de-transition?
If you’ve had negative experiences with therapy or you’ve heard stories from others who have, you may understandably feel cautious.
Being misunderstood, invalidated, or pressured in therapy can be deeply painful, especially when you’re seeking support around something as personal as your identity. Taking time to carefully choose a therapist is a way of protecting yourself, and those concerns are completely valid.
Many of our clinicians at Chicago Therapy Associates are members of the LGBTQ+ community and/or staunch allies, passionate about providing quality mental health care to the trans/GNC community.
What do I need for gender affirming surgery or hormone therapy?
We’re honored that you’re considering Chicago Therapy Associates to be part of your journey toward living as your authentic self. Gender-affirming surgery is a significant milestone, and we’re here to support you throughout the process.
If you’re planning to use insurance to cover gender-affirming surgery, many insurance providers require one or two letters of support for facial or chest procedures and two letters of support for most genital or reproductive surgeries.
These letters typically must come from two different licensed mental health professionals and are often required to be completed within six months of one another. Many insurance companies, including larger providers, also require that at least one letter be written by a doctoral-level psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.). If you are paying out of pocket, many surgeons require only one letter of support that meets the current WPATH Standards of Care, though requirements vary by surgeon.
Appointments for letters of support generally involve one to three sessions with one of our clinicians. During these appointments, your therapist will gather information about your medical history, mental health history, gender journey, experiences with gender dysphoria, and your readiness for the procedure you are pursuing.
Our clinicians can provide letters of support for many types of gender-affirming surgeries, including facial feminization or masculinization surgery (FFS/FMS), chest or top surgery, and genital or bottom surgery.
Hormone therapy has also become more accessible in recent years. Many providers who offer gender-affirming hormone therapy now use an informed consent model and do not require a letter from a mental health professional. However, if your provider or insurance company does require a letter, our clinicians who are qualified to provide documentation can assist you through the process and, when needed, help connect you with affirming medical providers.
If you’re looking for gender-affirming medical care, we’re also happy to provide referrals to trusted LGBTQ+-affirming providers with experience caring for transgender and nonbinary individuals.
You Can Continue To Discover and Live In Your True Self
At Chicago Therapy Associates, we’re committed to providing thoughtful, affirming care for individuals seeking support around gender identity and gender-affirming medical care.
Our therapists pursue ongoing education and specialized training in gender-affirming practices, including assessment, letters of support when appropriate, and ongoing therapeutic care throughout every stage of your journey.
